Consolidating Five Legacy Avionics Test Sets Into A Reusable ATE Platform

Discover The Project

A global rotorcraft manufacturer supporting commercial and defense markets needed to modernize how it verified safety-critical avionics subsystems on a next-generation program. The program had accumulated five stand-alone avionics test sets used across repair depots, contract manufacturers, and engineering centers, all approaching end of life and increasingly difficult to maintain or extend.

Rather than refreshing five independent systems one-by-one, Good Automation proposed consolidating their functionality into a single three-bay automated test system designed as a reusable ATE platform. The goal was to preserve or improve coverage, reduce long-term maintenance burden, and establish an architecture pattern that could be reused for future subsystems, including landing gear.

Reusable ATE Architecture

Designed, built, and validated a consolidated three-bay automated test platform to replace five legacy avionics test sets, structured as common infrastructure rather than a fixed-purpose rack.

Maintainable Mass Interconnect

Implemented a high-density Mac Panel style interconnect with ITA and an adapter strategy to provide clean, maintainable connections to multiple LRUs while supporting future variants.

Built On The Customer’s Framework

Adopted the customer’s existing internal test software framework to maximize reuse, reduce NRE, and ensure the delivered system felt native and could be sustained by in-house teams.

                                                                                          • Replaced five end-of-life avionics test sets with a single monolithic three-bay ATE platform supporting safety- and mission-critical LRUs.
                                                                                          • Reduced full regression campaigns from roughly three engineer-months of manual effort to about one week of automated execution, often run overnight and reviewed the next morning.
                                                                                          • Established a reusable reference architecture that was later applied to a new subsystem: an automated landing gear test system built on the same platform principles and internal framework.
                                                                                          • Long-term partnership impact: the engagement expanded over time into multiple programs and delivered projects, with the avionics and landing gear platforms serving as reference designs for future refresh initiatives.
